New XPeng L05 launches in China ahead of expected NZ arrival
XPeng’s new five-seat SUV has arrived in China in electric and range-extender forms. A New Zealand launch is expected in early 2027, with local details still to come.

XPeng has launched its new L05 SUV in China, introducing a five-seat model with a choice of battery-electric and range-extender powertrains.
The L05 is expected in New Zealand in the first quarter of 2027, following an earlier regional product roadmap. Local pricing, specifications and the powertrains that will be offered here are yet to be announced.
Known as the MONA L05 in China, the SUV went on sale there on 29 October. Its launch adds a larger model to XPeng’s MONA family and gives Kiwi buyers an early look at another electric-focused SUV that could join the local market.

Electric or range-extender
XPeng has launched six versions in China: four battery-electric models and two with a petrol range extender. Both layouts drive the rear wheels using an electric motor, while the range-extender adds a petrol engine to help supply energy for longer journeys.
The electric models use lithium iron phosphate batteries with capacities of 58.2kWh or 71.1kWh, depending on the variant. XPeng quotes up to 635km of electric driving range for the China-market EV under the Chinese CLTC test cycle.
The range-extender version has a 37.2kWh battery. XPeng claims 310km of electric range and 1,310km of combined range on the same CLTC cycle, with a full battery and fuel tank.
Those figures are China-market claims, not New Zealand ratings. CLTC results are not directly comparable with WLTP figures, and real-world range will vary with speed, weather, load and driving conditions. XPeng has not confirmed which L05 powertrains or battery sizes will come here.
Size and cabin
At 4,870mm long, the L05 is a substantial five-seat SUV, with a 2,940mm wheelbase. Its sloping roofline and frameless doors give it a more streamlined look than a conventional upright family SUV.
XPeng quotes 702 litres of rear luggage space in China, expanding to 1,913 litres with the rear seats folded. The battery-electric version also has a 102-litre front boot. Local measurements and equipment may differ.
Inside, China-market equipment includes a 17.3-inch central touchscreen and a head-up display. Depending on the version and options, XPeng also offers features such as a reclining front passenger seat and a rear entertainment screen. It remains to be seen which equipment will make the New Zealand line-up.
What about NZ pricing?
The China launch includes a limited-time starting price of 139,800 yuan ( NZD 37,211.81) for the entry electric model. That figure is specific to China and is not an indication of New Zealand pricing.
The important questions for local buyers are still unanswered: how much the L05 will cost, which powertrains XPeng will choose, and what range, charging figures and equipment the NZ models will have. The first-quarter 2027 timing is an expectation rather than a confirmed delivery date, so further details will be needed closer to launch.
