The Polestar 2 is getting a successor, with the Swedish electric car brand planning a completely new generation of its sedan for a global launch in early 2027.

For New Zealand drivers, it is a car worth watching. The Polestar 2 helped establish the brand locally, giving buyers an electric alternative with a low-slung shape in a market increasingly focused on SUVs.

There is still plenty we do not know. Polestar has not confirmed New Zealand pricing, local specifications or a local arrival date for the next car. The early-2027 timing is the company's global plan, not a promise of when Kiwis can take delivery.

A fresh start for the Polestar 2

Polestar says the next Polestar 2 will be a completely new successor, rather than just an update to the existing model. It forms part of a wider expansion that also includes the Polestar 4 SUV and a future compact SUV called the Polestar 7.

The existing Polestar 2 has played a major part in building the brand. It introduced many drivers to Polestar's blend of electric power, Scandinavian design and a cabin centred around Google-based infotainment.

Its successor will enter a busy market. Electric sedans now compete with a growing choice of crossovers and SUVs, giving the new Polestar 2 an opportunity to appeal to drivers who still prefer a lower car.

What has been confirmed?

For now, the confirmed details are limited. Polestar has identified the next-generation model and its planned global launch window, but has not yet published the final design, battery sizes, driving range, charging performance or local prices.

That means figures circulating for the new car should be treated with care until the company releases its specifications. The same goes for NZ availability: interest in a successor is encouraging, but the global announcement does not establish a local delivery date.

Why it matters for Kiwi buyers

A new Polestar 2 could give existing owners something to consider when they are ready to change cars, as well as offering another option for drivers looking beyond an SUV.

The details that will decide its appeal are still ahead: price, real-world usability, charging and range, along with the final shape and equipment. For now, the important news is that Polestar's sedan is set to continue.
