WoF changes from November: who will get longer between inspections?

Changes to New Zealand’s WoF rules start on 1 November 2026, but the new inspection intervals will be phased according to a vehicle’s age and first-registration date.

From 1 November 2026, many New Zealand light vehicles will move to less frequent warrants of fitness, while older cars will also get a longer interval. The change is phased, so the date on a vehicle’s first registration determines when the new frequency applies. Current WoF expiry dates do not move; the revised interval takes effect at the next inspection.

For newer vehicles, the second WoF shifts from the third anniversary to the fourth anniversary. Vehicles in the 4-to-14-year group move from annual to two-yearly inspections in stages: vehicles first registered from 1 November 2019 are scheduled to change from 1 November 2026, while vehicles first registered from 1 November 2013 through 31 October 2019 move from 1 November 2027. Check the NZTA guidance for the exact date that applies to your vehicle.

Vehicles aged 14 to 26 remain on annual WoFs. Vehicles first registered before 1 January 2000 move from six-monthly to annual inspections. The changes apply to light vehicles, excluding agricultural vehicles. Rental vehicles with a CoF A are subject to related frequency changes.

Inspection requirements are also being updated. Inspectors will need to check for warning or fault indicators related to systems that control vehicle steering or movement, such as some driver-assistance and braking technologies. The purpose is to keep safety-related systems in working order, rather than to add a blanket test of every electronic feature.

The practical takeaway is to keep the existing expiry date in your calendar and confirm your vehicle’s new interval through NZTA or your inspection provider. A longer WoF interval does not remove the need to maintain tyres, brakes, lights and other safety equipment between inspections.
