Chery Q raises a small EV question for New Zealand
Chery’s electric Q hatch made its European debut in Paris with a claimed 400km NEDC range. There is no word on a New Zealand launch, but it could give the brand a smaller EV to sit alongside its SUVs.

The Chery Q is one to watch if the brand wants to move beyond SUVs and hybrids in New Zealand. It is a small electric hatchback with the sort of packaging that could suit urban households, but there is no confirmation it is coming here.

A small EV in Chery’s Paris line-up
Chery showed the Q at the Paris Motor Show from 12 to 18 October, marking the model’s first European appearance. The company describes it as a fully electric city car. Chery France says it measures 4.19 metres long, with a 2.70-metre wheelbase, and lists a 375-litre boot plus a 70-litre front compartment.
That makes it larger than the phrase “city car” might suggest. The Q looks positioned as a practical five-door hatch for daily use, rather than a tiny two-seat runabout. Chery also highlights 38 storage spaces and vehicle-to-load (V2L), which lets the car power compatible electrical equipment.
Chery’s published figures for the version shown in France include a 41kWh battery, 121hp electric motor and up to 400km of range on the NEDC test cycle. The company says charging from 30 to 80 per cent takes less than 17 minutes. NEDC is an older test standard, so that 400km figure should not be read as a direct prediction of real-world or NZ-test-cycle range.
Could it work here?
There is a plausible opening. Chery New Zealand currently presents a line-up built around Tiggo SUVs and has announced its Stockman plug-in hybrid ute, while the Q would give the brand a smaller, fully electric option. A compact hatch can be easier to park and less bulky for city driving than the SUVs now doing most of the work in Chery’s local range.
But product fit alone does not mean a launch is likely. Chery France says the Q’s French introduction will be confirmed later, and Chery New Zealand has not announced a local arrival. Price, right-hand-drive supply, final NZ specifications, safety equipment and warranty terms would all matter. The overseas range claim also needs context before buyers can compare it with local alternatives.
There is another naming wrinkle: Chery International identifies the Chinese-market QQ3 as the domestic counterpart to the export-market Q, and cautions that badges and styling can differ between versions. That gives the model a broader pipeline story, but it is still the Q shown at Paris that matters for any future export decision.
For now, the Chery Q is a watch-list car rather than a confirmed Kiwi arrival. If Chery can bring it here at a sharp price with competitive real-world range and strong after-sales support, it could add a useful smaller-EV option to a brand best known locally for SUVs. Until the company says more, that remains a possibility, not a promise.
